5/5/08 Happy Cinco de Mayo !

During the month of MAY I will be focusing on guitar SETUP type work. Structurally broken guitars will be taken in but will take a back seat to all SETUPS. I hope this will help customers that have been waiting and can't leave a repair as long as it has been taking for most of this year. We will be taking about a 8 day vacation in June so please arrange your work as soon as possible!

4/5/08 I have in the works a slight makeover in our yahoo shopping cart.

timsguitarpartsandaccessories.com

Soon this area will have more parts and supplies to choose than ever before and as always secure check out in the cart on Yahoo servers!

3/05/08 New Cool Picks are finally in stock. THE DESIGN CONCEPT

is set out to make the greatest sounding, most durable, positive grip pick in the world.

The JURATEX line of picks are produced using the best Acetyl Polymer available today.

The main playing characteristics of this material are a full rich tone with super fast rebound properties.

The Acetyl Polymer has less flex than other materials used in modern pick production.

This extra firmness offers great pick attack with less tip flex.

We use our patented AGT (Applied Grip Technology)in

Securing a fine sand textured Accu-Grip to this amazing pick.

This sand is carefully applied to offer a great positive grip,

while not damping the full rich tone of the pick.

Cool Juratex picks will ROCK your world!

2/22/08

Please note that my service agreement with Fender Musical Instrument Corporation will expire on March 15, 2008 , and effective immediately I will no longer do any WARRANTY SERVICE for the numerious brands they now own. I have been a GOLD level guitar and BRONZE level amp service facility for them many years, and I will still sell original parts and accessories as they remain available! I will continue to repair, setup and upgrade FMIC brand guitars for our valued customers on a NON Warranty basis!

Jan 05, 2008 update

It's 2008 and time for a short update on what will be happening at Tims Guitar Repair Workshop. Finally I should be back on my usual repair and store hour schedule beginning January 5th, 2008. I will take repairs in again the first 2 weeks of each month, and do the best to get them back as soon as possible. Quality repair work takes time, and I do not rush out work to keep a time schedule if it compromises the end result. For 29 years the goal is "do guitar repairs RIGHT--not RIGHT NOW. I appreciate all of the loyal customers I have had the priviledge of serving over the vast number of years and look forward to new clients moving forward. A few new changes at Tims Guitar Repair workshop;

All guitar work will now have an up front $25 deposit/bench estimate fee when your guitar is brought in the shop. In most cases I will not be able to stop working to evaluate guitars as they come in the door. This fee will apply to your total repair if you choose to leave an instrument for service. Most heavily damaged restoration work will require 50% deposit before work begins. If you decide not to have the guitar serviced after we bench check the instrument, then you will still get a written quote of services needed to schedule a future time to have repairs done. The estimate fee will not apply to repairs if you decide not to have the instrument serviced. This covers my time to evaluate your guitar properly. I have to implement this evaluation fee due to the overwhelming number of guitars purchased on Ebay and other online sources that usually fall well below buyers expectations.

Repairs that are under the Minimum $25 estimate fee, like restringing your guitar, installing strapbuttons, etc. can usually be done while you wait or picked up later the same day!

As most of you know I am the Authorized Factory Warranty Service Center for C.F. Martin & CO. and Taylor guitars. Warranty on any of these products WILL REQUIRE THE ORIGINAL SALES RECEIPT with the exception of CF Martin if you show your warranty registration card that was mailed when properly registered. PLEASE TRY TO BRING IN WARRANTY TYPE SERVICE THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY ONLY!

I have been asked over and over to bring back our Rush Fee Service. I do understand that in some cases a real emergency exists, but in many cases I am talked into doing a same day job to find that the guitar sits here for a week before the rush customer returns to pick up the work! A favorite quote from Mr. Gene Liberty "It may be possible to interrupt normal work flow and put your job in front of less important people whose work came in ahead of yours. An extra charge may be made for this service." So begining 2008 I will offer Rush service on reasonable requests (We obviously can not refinish your guitar or repair a broken headstock overnight!). The pricing will be $75 plus 150% of the normal rate for required service--ALL PAYABLE IN ADVANCE. This will cover the overtime that I will have to stay late or start early the next day to catch back up to where I should be at the repair bench. So if you have an emergency, I will do my best to help so bring the guitar right in.

Now that you may have purchased or received a new guitar from any number of big box stores (Bed bath and beyond, Walmart, Toys R Us, etc.) or giant music chain stores and find that the guitar just doesn't feel right (strings way too high to press), play in tune or stay in tune, or many more issues than I have time to go over here--------Come by our 3000 sq ft repair facility and see why we are and have been "Your Guitars Best Friend" for 29 years. Buying a musical instrument is not like buying a CD player that you can pop a disc in, turn on, and all works fine! I have always had to pre-adjust each guitar that we sell before presenting it to the consumer no matter what price point of the guitar! Trying to learn on a maladjusted guitar is just painful and will almost insure an immediate loss of interest in persuing a musical dream. Give yourself or loved one the best chance at the gift of music-a properly setup musical instrument! WE DO THAT!

Sincerely,
Tim Lawson

October 15th 2007-----We have some good news and bad news. Our shop is completely booked up thru the end of this year and we will take in new repair work beginning Jan 5th 2008. We will continue to install electric and acoustic pickups in 1-2 day turn around if you buy the pickups from us. Oh yea, the labor is free on most electric pickup installations thru the end of this year. We will also do restringing, install strap buttons and strap locks, tuner machine heads, and do AUTHORIZED FACTORY SERVICE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY DURING THE LAST QUARTER OF THIS YEAR. ALL WARRANTY WORK WILL REQUIRE A COPY OF YOUR SALES RECEIPT AT THE TIME YOU SET THE APPOINTMENT. I will be happy to look at any guitar repair that you may want to do but there is a $25 bench/ estimate fee for this evaluation and we will set up the service time for beginning 2008. Thank you TML

Under Construction

Some Interesting Repair Projects completed at Tims Guitar Workshop
Martin Top Replacement

1965 Martin arrives to my shop from Shreveport, LA after very poor attempt to repair.

Guitar needs New Top, New Bridge, and Neck Reset.

Just can't believe anyone would do this in a retail repair shop!

Headstock view of this Martin Acoustic

View of neck removed from body to begin top replacement

Notice the Classic French Dovetail neck construction

Now comes the fun part--Cut away the old top to measure bracing

for the new top.

We cut around the top with a jig saw being very careful

not to damage the heel block, tail block, or lining that secures

the top to the rims.

Another view of top being removed

After taking careful measurements of the original top, we use our

go bar deck to glue all of the bracing to the top. All braces can be glued

at the same time with this type of fixture

Another view ot top bracing.

Now the top is being clamped in position after many steps in carving braces

and matching the location of X brace and shoulder brace thru the lining . This is very

important when viewing the guitar inside. All of the notches on the rim must align with new top.

Another look at top being clamped into position. When we removed the old top I saved the original

top binding to reuse on this new top. This extra step really is worth the effort to keep this guitar looking very vintage

and original. Many shops will router off the binding and use what ever is currently available. I was lucky this time.

This view shows only a slight lacquer touchup needed on the side when

spraying lacquer finish on the new top.

Top view of original outer binding of guitar top with new rosette around the soundhole

We spray nitrocelluose lacquer on the top with aging toner to restore the look of this

guitar. The toner is important to make the top look like it is 40 plus years old.

This photo is without a flash in more dim lighting

This is a much better pic of the top since my camera used the flash.

This little guitar now plays great with the new top and neck set.

Electric Fender Stratocaster Restoration

BEFORE
These Carvings are very deep into the soft Alder body. This eliminates the option of spraying original sunburst colors!

AFTER

BEFORE
We obviously chose olympic white! One of the many solid color options in the early 60's.

AFTER

BEFORE
After sanding carefully and removing all cross grain scratches, we filled in carvings with epoxy/wood mix to level.

AFTER

BEFORE
After a complete sanding and reworking the neck, a fret hone and dress was all that it needed to play ---real Niiiiiiiice!

AFTER

AFTER
This was a complicated project that was a pleasure to restore. Many thanks to Mr. Bowman for his endless patience and confidence with my shop. Some more cool things that cant be seen in the photos is the fine "Relic" type aging of the toner with very cool weather "checking/cracking" of the Nitrocellulose lacquer finish coats. With a little time and some real play wear this instrument will age gracefully like a fine bottle of wine!

We Specialize in Broken Headstock Repair or Replacement

This unfortunate headstock break often happens on angled headstock guitar necks!

First Step

Step Two
We clean away about 1 1/2 inches of end of finger board to create a interlocking joint for new headstock splice.

Step Three

Step Four
We now create a blank from Honduras Mahogany. Mill for truss rod channel and fit perfectly to original neck.

Final Check

Step Five
We now trim excess wood and shape outline of old headstock.

New Headstock

Rear View
We now let epoxy cure and get ready for Pearl inlays, Decals, Custom Inlays, etc.

Begin Finish

Wood Filler
We Seal the Mahogany, apply wood filler, then apply Nitrocellulose Lacquers and Top coats

Complete Finish

Rear View
We buff out, install parts and now the guitar plays exactly like it did originally!

Front View- decals applied.

This repair is strong and exact and will last longer than the wood itself. We especially recommend this repair instead of Neck Replacement whenever possible since only 2 inches of the neck is reshaped! You wont need to learn the feel of a different neck contour.

Classical Headstock Repairs

FIRST THING IS TO CLEAN PARTS AND DRY FIT!

NEXT STEP IS TO EPOXY AND CLAMP IN CORRECT ALIGNMENT.

THIS MODEL REQUIRED A NEW FACE VENEER OVERLAY THAT THE CUSTOMER HAD PURCHASED. BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD
.
AFTER SHAPING THE NEW VENEER FACE WE INSTALLED A PEARL SNOWFLAKE APPROVED BY THE CUSTOMER. ALL WAS SEALED AND FINISHED IN NITROCELLULOSE LACQUER.

BACK VIEW OF REPAIRS
AFTER CLEAR LACQUER WITH MATCHING TINT WAS APPLIED OVER BACK OF THE NECK ALL WAS COMPLETED AND READY FOR MANY MORE YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE!

The "Master Luthier" is a term that is given to a master craftsman who has the ability and skill level to handcraft a guitar from beginning to completion.

In many large factories several workers are responsible for the completion of a single instrument. Only the most experienced craftsman that has demonstrated proficiency in every task is given the distinction of "master luthier".

I am proud to introduce The Master Luthier series guitars. After 26 years of extensive factory authorized warranty service for all leading guitar manufactures, I am confident that the quality of construction and materials make this instrument a best buy in the wide range of guitars offered today.
